Mia Larkin | Concrete Canoe

Concrete Canoe is a club where we build a canoe out of concrete! It's not as simple as it seems though! The challenge is to deliver an appropriate concrete design mix in accordance with the rules, choose the best type and amount of reinforcement, build the canoe with a consistent process, write-up an in-depth design paper, give a panel presentation to judges, and race against other teams in the canoe we make!

The Beginning:

As current Vice-President of the club, I put a lot of effort and time into the club's work and enjoy doing it! When I joined, the club was recovering from COVID so we spent most of the first year trying to promote and recover the team! The effort on behalf of all of the E-Board payed off as the team almost tripled from the previous year!

Now:

In my current role, I plan a lot of meetings, maintain contact with the club members, reach out to Alumni, lead and mentor junior members, and promte an overall fun and productive environment! On the project side, I have leaned more into the graphics side of things like creating stickers, event images, drawing covers, and creating and sending out newletters. More than that, however, I've had a lot of hands on experience with building the canoe and have spent a lot of time on the professional design paper!

The Future:

2024 is the first year, since I've joined, that we'll be competing and we're putting in a lot of effort in hopes of placing! With the help of our graduate advisor, we've been preparing the whole year and are still passionatly working on our deliverables. For now, all we can do is prepare for what's next! Wish us luck!
